ATSR Aerosol_cci SU

World Meteorological Organization

The Swansea Univertsity (SU) AATSR product is one of three ATSR-2/AATSR aerosol ECV products produced in the ESA Aerosol_cci project. This aerosol product is produced over both land and ocean using model inversion, using both views of the (A)ATSR, and the four solar reflective channels.  SU AATSR is applied to ATSR-2 (on ERS-2; 1995-2003) and AATSR (on ENVISAT; 2002-2012), which together span a period of 17 years. The SU dual view aerosol retrieval algorithm allows for AOD estimation without prior information on surface reflectance. The SU ATSR standard products are AOD, aerosol model as a a fraction of four aerosol components, and AOD per-retrieval uncertainty.

Example results: (left): global aggregated AOD for 2008; (right) 17-years time series of annual mean AOD over land at 550 nm for the whole globe, compared with AERONET.

Parameter(s)

L2: AOD at 0.55, 0.67, 0.87 and 1.6 μm;  Ångström exponent (0.55-0.87); per-pixel uncertainty estimates, aerosol mixture fractions (fine/coarse, absorbing/non-absorbing, dust/sea salt),  L3: Mean and s.d. of variables, and also mean fine mode AOD, at 1deg spatially, and at daily and monthly time steps

Aerosol algorithm SU ATSR
Cloud screening

Combination of instrument flags and further tests, and cloud edge post-processing.

Aerosol model

Aerosol_cci common aerosol components (de Leeuw et al., 2013).

Retrieval assumptions

Fit to North  et al. (1999) surface model over land.

Cox and Munk surface model for retrieval over ocean

Retrieval limitations Retrieval over land is less well constrained at high optical depths, and retrieval limited to AOT<2.0.
Spatial, temporal coverage 1995-2012, global
Spatial, temporal resolution L2 (10x10 km2) and L3 (1°×1°) resolution datasets; ATSR swath width is 512 km, resulting in global coverage in 5-6 days.
Operations status Annual reprocessing
Validation status Based on intercomparison of L2 and L3 products with AERONET and with other satellite data
Quality control Uncertainty estimate for  each AOD includes propagation of instrument and surface uncertainty and inversion error surface.
